The Wholesale ATA Market: Cisco, Linksys, Sipura, DLink, more?

The recent aquisition of Sipura by Linksys is part in parcel for the giant telecom supplier Cisco, who realises the growing residential marketplace for VoIP. This is a giant step, and a cheap purchase at $68 million USD when you consider that Sipura and Linksys are the major suppliers of Analog Telephone Adapters, which is now a monopoly in the market. By far this will double the global marketshare of Linksys as a company and increase the supply chain. From a VoIP service provider perspective, the Sipura management has been easier to work with in order to get orders for ATA's. With Vonage using Linksys, and virtually eating up all of their inventory on a weekly basis (15,000+ a week in ATA's), it's no wonder they purchased another manufacturer. Linksys also has had some software issues with their router, which means the Sipura system has a longer life span with clients. This could be a good or bad thing. Good thing as less support, bad thing as less turn-over in equipment. (Consumer world mentality) Sipura buy out is the second time for the creators of Komodo Phone and Sipura. Long way from little old Vancouver Canada where they first started.

Luckily I have sourced great pricing via D-Link and other providers who build ATA's in China and in Vancouver BC of all places. The pricing is better than Sipura and CISCO, generally $60+ per box on volume. (100 or more) We have tested all of the ATA's in the market with Asterisk based systems and our own technology. Including internetworking with SIP, SER, STUN, Cisco boxes, and the like. We have found the Linksys ATA to be one of the easiest to set-up, we also have another vendor who we will be sending more business to who provides the D-Link ATAs.

What is the importance of the ATA in the VoIP Market?

The ATA alows the traditional consumers to use their existing analog phones and plug them into a box that allows them to make and receive calls. It's extremely funny to plug it in and call clients on their ATA when they first get it...they always say "WOW it works, you guys are going to make so much money, the quality is so good!" Well, the ATA gives that quality to the market, and gives VoIP a good name. Softphones and IP Phones still have several cycles of development to be as good of quality as the ATA, it's just a matter of software.
